Drooling is usually caused by reduced swallowing frequency and swallowing inefficiency. Drooling is a symptom of swallowing impairment.
Strategies to compensate for drooling:
- Intentionally, collect saliva using cheeks, tongue, and lips and move saliva back to be swallowed.
- Consciously swallow every few minutes, especially when watching TV, or reading
- Sit upright. Slouching or head-forward worsens drooling.
- Stay hydrated. Thick saliva is harder to swallow.
- Sugar-free gum or hard candy can stimulate swallowing.
